Minimising Your Pet's Stress
Pets, in general, are not big fans of the Christmas Season.
All the additional stimulation from visitors and activities can be very stressful. Then NYE comes along, and there are literally missiles and rockets flying from the sky at them, making strange and loud noises.
We have put together a small list of ways you can keep your animals happy(ish) and safe on New Year’s Eve.
Make A Safe Space
The loud noises, rumbles and bright lights are just too much for canines and felines alike. And if they’re on the shy side, they might also hate the appearance of party guests. With people frequently entering and exiting your home, there’s a chance a skittish pet could dash out the door. Diminish those odds by keeping your pet enclosed in a room that won’t see any foot traffic. If you have a quiet room with no windows (even just a bathroom), try putting their dog or cat bed and their favourite blanket and toys in there before the fireworks start. Some pets even like the security of hiding in the bathtub! Keep the door closed until the festivities are over and your dog or cat is calm.
ThunderShirt
Try putting a ThunderShirt on your dog or cat if they really hate fireworks. These weighted vests work similar to swaddling a baby or giving someone a comforting hug. Microchip
If the unthinkable does happen.......
Make sure your pet is microchipped and the details are current. It significantly increases your animal’s chances of getting home if you’re separated.
Collar & Tag
Make sure they have a well fitted collar on. You shouldn’t be able to fit more than two fingers between the collar and your pet’s neck. With an ID tag with your dog or cat’s name and your phone number clearly displayed.
Use common sense, and your pet will have a relatively pleasant and safe New Year’s Eve!
